Here are some tips on getting your new dog adjusted to life in your home:

Start everyday with physical activity like a walk.

Dogs who get exercise in the morning are a lot calmer the rest of the day.

Dogs like routine, so stick as closely as possible to walking, feeding and sleeping at the same times.

Put an old shirt, towel or blanket that smells like you in their crate or their bed.

It helps your dog ease separation anxiety.

Carve out time to engage in play with them.

You could use a squeaky toy or ball to play fetch.

Use light, happy tones when speaking with them.

Dogs respond to ‘baby talk’.

Practice basic training commands like sit and stay with them.

Use small treats to keep their attention on you and reward them.

If your new dog lets you pet him or her, physical touch releases oxytocin in the dog’s brain and makes them feel good and bonded to you.

If your dog is scared of getting close to you, sitting down at the same level as they are makes you more approachable. Do a calm activity while sitting with them like reading a book or eat snacks together. Repeat until they are comfortable to move closer to you. You may have to do this day after day.
